Viewing Device Monitors and Status

Panel

When viewing devices of type server, you will be presented with a box labelled "Managed Device Monitoring". If this server is managed by Contegix and has the Contegix-managed Sensu monitoring agent installed, this box will contain a list of all Sensu checks being executed on the host. The "Check Name" field contains the name of the check as it is known to Sensu. The "Status" icon indicates the most recent status of the check, with green indicating OK, yellow indicating warning, red indicating critical, and grey indicating an unknown status. In addition, two links that allow the user to view the full configuration of the check, and to view historical event occurrences are provided.  The "Last Issued" column is the time of day (relative to server timezone) that the check was last issued.

Viewing Monitor Configuration and Output

Panel

Clicking a check name in the Managed Device Monitoring box will launch a pop-up window containing a summary of the check's configuration and output from the most recent run. Below is a summary of the most relevant check parameters and output items.

Check Configuration

  • command: Indicates the script that is executed by the monitor on the server and the command-line parameters which are passed to it.
  • interval: The interval (in seconds) between executions of this check.
  • handlers: Defines which Sensu handlers should be invoked to process the output of the check. For most checks of type "availability", no handler will be specified.

Check Output

  • output: The output of the check script. Usually consists of "<script name> <status>: <detail>", but may also contain an error message if the check failed to run correctly.
  • status: A numeric representation of the check's status.
    • 0: OK status
    • 1: Warning status
    • 2: Critical status
    • 3: Unknown status
  • issued: A timestamp in UNIX epoch indicating when the check completed and its output was reported.
  • flapping: Indicates whether the check is in a "flapping" state. Flapping checks are those which are alternating between OK and non-OK statuses frequently.
  • occurrences: The number of times the check has reported a non-OK status since the last OK status.
  • client: The name of the client on which the check was executed.
  • check: The name of the check that was executed.

Viewing Event History

Panel

When clicking on the calendar icon next to a given check, a graph popup appears.  This graph instrument allows the viewing of historical occurrences of events that have fired, along with the various levels of severity.  This interface is somewhat similar to viewing standard metric templates for your device.   An example is provided below.
